Challenge: Cost-Effective Disposal of High Salinity Brine Volume

Managing brine disposal is a critical challenge for industries focused on minimal liquid discharge (MLD) or zero liquid discharge (ZLD) water management strategies. Conventional evaporation systems are limited by the local climate and increasing capacity requires substantial capital costs, larger land footprints, and operational inefficiencies.

H2nanO's Solution

Oasis enhances brine evaporation under outdoor conditions by combining three key mechanisms: expanded surface area for evaporation, localized photothermal heating at the water’s surface, and increased wind turbulence to accelerate water vapour transfer. The result is faster evaporation without the drawbacks of conventional techniques, like overspray pollution, fouling of moving parts, or noise pollution.

Key results:

Passive Enhanced Evaporation – Oasis enhanced evaporation performance was evaluated with up to 69% evaporation enhancement over a brine control in a Northern Alberta climate.
Widespread Applicability – Oasis has been validated in a variety of brine samples ranging from seawater salinity up to 200,000 mg/L produced water samples and has been demonstrated across a diverse array of climatic conditions.

Simple, Modular Operations – Oasis materials are simple to deploy and collect, requiring minimal new infrastructure or disruption to existing operations. Oasis material deployment can be localized to specific pond sections and can expand as needed to increase the evaporation capacity of a pond system.
For new installations, Oasis can reduce pond size and capital costs, while existing ponds can be easily retrofitted to boost evaporation capacity.
