H2nanO Receives New MICA Fund IV Grant to Apply Low-Energy Brine Desalination
The Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) – a federal Strategic Innovation Fund network – has announced its Fund IV recipients, including $210,000 to H2nanO development of our Stratus desalination and brine concentration technology for Canadian critical minerals mining and brine extraction. Stratus aims to increase the water and energy efficiency of brine and hard rock operations to extract and process critical minerals and metals, including battery metals and rare earth elements.
H2nanO and industry partners will evaluate Stratus for applications in brine concentration and distillate water reuse using low energy natural – solar and geothermal – and surplus industrial heat sources for a minimized energy, cost and carbon footprint for brine processing and water reuse in mining operations. H2nanO’s goal is to enable our future energy and data systems from the bottom up with desalination technology that utilizes the energy we have for water-efficient operations.
The project will accelerate the scale-up of Stratus, grow H2nanO’s research and development team, and forge new industry partnerships towards bringing the technology to field readiness and first case studies. H2nanO is grateful for MICA’s continued support of innovation for water in mining, with this third grant towards our technology development and scaling efforts.
